Short answer Yes
Moonshot EHR imports athenahealth practices through a staff-run pipeline that reads the athena C-CDA export, loads full-chart PDFs, imports the appointments export, brings encounter summaries in as visit notes, and carries open balances over as pending charges so the new system can collect them. It is a project run with Moonshot, not a self-serve button.
How it works in Moonshot
- C-CDA files are parsed and shaped into patients, problems, medications, allergies, vitals and results, then verified against the source with a database-side comparator.
- Full-chart PDFs load into the patient's Files with a 200 MB upload cap per file; encounter summaries become readable visit notes.
- Open patient balances become pending saved charges with the athena claim reference on them; unapplied credits carry over as account credit.
- Labs and chart PDFs can be released to the patient portal in a controlled step after cutover.
Limits, stated plainly
- Insurance claims, payer data and eligibility do not transfer; Moonshot does not bill insurance.
- Memberships are derived from the transaction export and rebuilt by staff; the old card tokens do not move.
- Staff-run only. Plan it with Moonshot before giving notice to athena.

Questions people ask next
What do we need from athena to start?
The C-CDA export, the full-chart PDF export, the appointments and transactions reports. Moonshot gives you the list before you request them.
Can patients see their old labs in the new portal?
Yes, once the clinic releases them. Critical and panic-flagged history is released only with an explicit opt-in.
Do old balances carry over?
Open balances come across as pending charges with the athena reference, so the desk can collect or adjust them in Moonshot.
