Short answer Yes
Moonshot EHR sends a records request to an outside facility by fax from the chart, and builds referral packets that carry the signed note, an AI-drafted reason for referral that staff edit, and recent labs. Outbound orders for imaging and outside labs go the same way, each with a diagnosis and a letter, and each leaves a receipt on the chart with its delivery status.
How it works in Moonshot
- Pick the facility from the external-provider directory or enter a fax number once; the request goes out with the patient's identifiers and what you are asking for.
- Referral packets assemble the signed note, labs and the reason for referral; the draft is suggested, never sent without a person reading it.
- Returned records arrive in the Fax tab and are filed to the patient. A disclosure log records what left the clinic and to whom.
- The Export tab on the profile faxes or releases a whole chart packet when a patient moves on.
Limits, stated plainly
- Transport is fax. There is no Direct messaging or payer portal integration.
- Incoming records are documents, not structured data, unless they are Quest results.

Questions people ask next
Can we track whether a records request was answered?
The outbound request shows its delivery status, and a task can be set to follow up; the returned fax files to the same chart.
Does the referral letter write itself?
The reason for referral is drafted from the note and labs; a clinician edits and approves it before anything is sent.
Can a patient ask us to send their records somewhere?
Yes. The Export tab builds the packet and faxes or releases it, and the disclosure log records it.
